It is a terrible thing to loose your eyesight. Researchers have come up with a new technology that could replenish sight of some. One of which would use a silicon type camera that would serve as the retina. Since the device will interact with the optic nerve it has electronic functions. The silicon gives the camera capability to move similar to the eye. The optoelectronic sensors have the control of amount of light received. One of the other ideas researcher are working on is called the bionic eye. With this one wires are used in trying to revitalize the optic nerve. Just like the other one it would also use a camera to capture images. The images will be caught by a chip behind the eyeball and sent to the brain. Protection such as eye wear is needed to ensure the 10 yr. life expectancy of the eye is met.
Another similarity of both the bionic eye and the silicon camera type neither can be used if you have glaucoma. Although it can be used if your optic nerve has been semi functional in some cases. Even if your brain can remember how to see doesn't mean you'll be able to see again. It is possible we may not know what the future holds.

Wow, that is a really cool article. It is hard to believe that we can put cameras in our eyes to take pictures and simulate vision.
ReplyDeleteI can only imagine how much a procedure like this would cost.
